The Mernie Project no. 2
My mom remembered a story to tell me, and now I’m telling it to you, about the hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross” that she plays in this second installment of #themernieproject.
When my mom was 14 years old her father passed away of a heart attack unexpectedly while he was at work. When a woman named Carolyn Carlson was consoling mom later, Carolyn said that at the church service the night before his death, my grandfather had requested that the hymn “The Old Rugged Cross”, his very favorite song, be played in the service and according to the story it was. The next day he died.
Mom said for many many years after that she could not play this hymn without crying.
Understandable.
And, all these 65 years later, she still thinks of her father each time she does play “The Old Rugged Cross”.
Inevitable.
